In education, this time of year finds us not only wrapping up a current school year, but also planning for the NEXT school year. From classroom supplies to tweaking of curriculum to better educate our students, the next school year is as much on our mind as the current one.
Our calendar for the 2012-2013 school year has roughly two half-days each month set aside for in-service. What would you like to see with these in-services? What topics would you like addressed? What do you see as some of the most beneficial information you could receive during these days?

ReplyDeleteI would like time to work with JH/HS teachers in the same discipline areas to to discuss what we are teaching and what things we may be duplicating or missing for the students. Also, having the time to work with other teachers to share ideas, plan together, and implement projects with each other. Mr. Farnham has brought the idea of doing a news show with one of his classes and mine, and having time to set that up and work with and figure out a plan of attack for that. I believe just having time to learn, implement, and plan for our new smartboard technology we are getting in the elementary as well.
ReplyDeleteI would like to have a regular time set aside for consultation/collaboration regarding students at risk. Our Problem Solving Team process is still evolving and I would like to see more students referred to this process earlier before everyone is pulling their hair out!
ReplyDeleteWhat would you like to see with these in-services?
ReplyDeleteApplication/Implementation of topics from in-services.
Improve our classroom organization and labs, for me maintaining the classroom, shop, and greenhouse not all get the attention they need and by this time of the year it is a disaster.
CTE instructors work on our Perkins applications, program reviews, funding applications, and data reporting.
CTE instructors review and align our elective offerings.
Grant writing! I get many opportunities, yet it just always gets pushed back then it is too late.
Work on more incorporating more Blackboard Learn class support materials online.
Implement “PBL”, Project Base Learning into CTE electives.
Formalize more evaluation rubrics.
Maintaining current web pages.
Work on bring more student science fair activities to the AgriScience side stressing more of the sciences in the curriculum, showing more linkages and career opportunities for students.
Integrate/align more SD My Life activities into courses for students.
What topics would you like addressed?
Obviously the Common Core & the Danielson Performance Review efforts
Motivation and Positive Work Environments, I think methods on dealing with the “load”, student behavior issues, frustrations, etc. could be helpful.
Utilizing technology in the classroom
Addressing obstacles with implementing technology
What do you see as some of the most beneficial information you could receive during these days?
Danielson Performance Review efforts
Unity on working towards the Common Core effort
Improving my overall teaching and learning efforts for students
I would like time to plan and gather new lessons that would address the Common Core Standards. It would be great to be able to meet with other teachers in the same disipline to share ideas, talk about students at risk, and to work together to meet the needs of all students.
ReplyDeleteI would also like to see time set aside at the beginning of the year for instruction on how to "run" Infinite Campus.
DeletePlay practice time.
